The Shallow Ecosystem on My Desk (150 Day Evolution)
Cutting an aquarium in half is not the best of ideas but it's a lot of fun. You can always DIY a something interesting out of the wreckage, and in this case I went on a journey of restoration and built an ecosystem. There's something about shallow fish tanks that appeals to a lot of people, and I thought my desktop was just the right place to appreciate mine (so that my fish can judge my every move while I edit videos about them).
Follow along as the fish tank develops the natural way; with no filter, and no co2 injection.

Homegrown strawberries taste sweeter when you don't have to remember to water them. This time I setup a small, cube ecosystem using an old, used aquarium I found for free on Marketplace. After ripping out the factory filter, I let it develop its own biological one, complete with aquaponic strawberries. I’m trying do the cave thing for my new tank but I don’t know what foam to use I can’t find the one your using do you have any recommendations also do you have to use silicone on top of it?
I used foam designed for pond scaping, so it's safe for aquatic life and you don't need to add anything. There are some generic foams that you can use if you silicone over them, but I'm not familiar with any. The brand I used is Touch n Foam in the UK, but there are even more options in say.. the US. Look for pond foam :)

Have I ever had fish? No. Do I plan on having fish? No. Yet I watched all 3 of their videos and I can’t get enough. They’re all extremely well made and you can see the care in each video. I will wait however long it takes for the next one.

As someone who absolutely Loved her fish and frogs as a kid (but hasn’t had any practice with an aquarium since then) it would be such a blessing to have a video in this format for a low budget beginner build! I’d love love love to give this a try - especially with the goal of having a self sustaining ecosystem! All three videos have inspired me so much to set that goal! It’d be especially helpful to have some troubleshooting as a starting point to refer to before making the decision to devote hundreds of dollars into the hobby (and time into the research!) Truly hoping to see more of this gold from your channel, even if it is just more of your own builds! ❤

@@Ball4Life12 I only change the water once every 3 months to reduce hardness buildup. Occasionally I'll pipette-out a pile of mulm if I want it looking nicer
That’s it!? Anything else u think helps keep it so clean? I am getting a 15 gallon long in 2 weeks for my birthday and it’s gonna be like a pond but a filter looks ugly and messes up the scape in my opinion
@@Ball4Life12 Pick some bottom dwellers to clear things up and turn the sand over. I find that helps reduce the mulm n stuff. Also feed clean foods with low levels of filler

I did sand it, but it was boring footage! I'll probably include some footage next time though, to set a good example.

Is it normal potting mix (soil) you are using as a ground layer or extra soil for aquaristic? Looking forward for more content. Keep cooking as long as you need to. :)
